Code Snippets

This is actually an old snippet, but hey it was completely commented in German before and with a slight outdated syntax. So here it is: My updated Multiplayer Chat script which I posted in the forums a few times.

It should have commented everything you need to understand the script and give you a little insight into Multiplayer Programming with 3DGS.

If you have any questions about this script. Don’t hesitate to ask!

Conitec/oP developing an MMOG

August 3rd, 2009 by Michael Schwarz and categorized as 3DGS, News | No Comments »

JCL posted in the forums today:

Some may have noticed that since the release of A7, Gamestudio support and distribution is not handled by Conitec but by another company, the oP group Germany GmbH.

Old timers may remember that Gamestudio was originally developed by oP group, and eventually sold to Conitec. In the 1990s, the oP group developed several small computer games, advertising games, TV games, and virtual exhibitions. Afterwards my job at Conitec became too time consuming, and the other oP group members had not much time either, so the oP group was put to sleep.

Now after ten years, oP group is starting with game development again. We are currently applying for a contract to develop a large scale MMOG for a certain organization. They have selected the A7 engine for this project. The main reason was the experience that they could set up a well working MMOG server for 350 users very quickly with A7 Pro, with only a few lines of script. However, the project will require some extensions to A7, like the PhysX plugin that’s currently developed by Chris3D, and a MySQL plugin.

Due to our knowledge of A7, we hope to have a good chance to win the development contract. We’ve already got the contract to prepare the project and hire the team of level designers.

Please cross your fingers that we’ll also get the final contract. Development would then start in September. The features implemented in A7 during the next year will become a little MMOG focused. But I guess this will also benefit the community.

Now, congratulations and all. But a MMO-Server in A7? Sounds ridiculous to me. Sure, a client for a MMO in A7/A6 is no problem… But a Server?

Well… let the professionals do their job. Anyway I’m crossing my fingers.

Menutastic

I’ve started working on the menu today as most of the “inner” working of Portico are practically finished.

So here is how far I got. Nothing special I know, but it scales dynamically with the resolution. That makes for less needed background pictures and I don’t even use multiple panels.

Now the windows for Save, Load and Options… yes that is going to be a bitch to do. But who knows, maybe I come up with some brilliant idea.

So yeah… When the menu is done, the next step will be more levels.

Kings

July 26th, 2009 by Michael Schwarz and categorized as This Humanity has no Future | No Comments »

Just finished watching the 13th episode of the first (and only) season of Kings. It’s a shame NBC cancelled this new refreshing series. But what to expect from executives? The first series in a long time with a fresh new plot, unlike anything we’ve ever seen before, amazing cinematography and actors. But, hey, no let’s cancel this, because it only ranks 4th every night!

For you who don’t know what Kings is: Kings is a series set in an alternative reality where there still are kings. The story follows king Silas, king of Gilboa. It practically is a modern re-enactment of the story of David (vs. Goliath). Now I’m no believer, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t have to like this series.

It’s something new, something refreshing, no drama, no action, no fantasy, no western, it simply.. IS.

Oh well… maybe they’ll decide to make a second season sometime in the future, but until then, we can put it in one box with all the other amazing series that were Too Good To Last together with Firefly and many others…

In any case, if you ever get your hands on this, buy it, watch it, and write angry mails to NBC!

Off

Wee… I got 2 weeks off from “work”. So to say. My client moved the project 2 weeks into the future.

Maybe now I got some more time to write here, and make a new Code Snippet tutorial!

In other news: Stargate Game

July 20th, 2009 by Michael Schwarz and categorized as Boredom, Stupidity, This Humanity has no Future | No Comments »

Yes please, you people that are looking in Google for “Stargate Game” and end up here on this blog on the article about the game “Stargate: The New Enemy”. There is nothing there, it was just an article about a noobish game developer team and their failing at doing the work right and at the same time boasting like they are a EA-Games-Microsoft conglomerate. They wanted to make a Stargate game, and failed at at like hundreds before them.

If you really want a Stargate game to play, sign up for the Stargate MMORPG beta.
